The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has clarified that permits are only required for picnics in public areas such as Central Park and the beach in Hulhumalé if individuals bring furniture or large setups.
Speaking to the media, HDC’s Head of Marketing and PR, Hassan Shaheed, stated that according to existing guidelines for the use of public spaces, casual picnics are permitted without prior permission. However, bringing items such as tables, chairs, or decorative backdrops does require a permit.
Shaheed added that HDC staff are actively working to maintain the cleanliness of public spaces in Hulhumalé. Additionaally, he said employees will also be engaging directly with the public to provide information and guidance on the proper use of these areas.
The clarification follows rumours on social media suggesting that picnicking in Central Park without prior permission was prohibited, and that a permit must be obtained three days in advance. HDC has refuted these claims, reiterating that permits are only necessary when setting up furniture or similar items in public areas.
