Mohamed Shimal has been appointed as the new Director General of the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), filling the position left vacant following the resignation of former director earlier this year.
Shimal, who has over 10 years of experience in marine research, was announced as the institute’s new head on April 6, 2025. MMRI described him as a long-serving contributor to its research programmes, with active involvement in national bodies such as the National Research Council and regional platforms like the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).
The MMRI, established in 1984 under the then Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, is tasked with conducting scientific research on marine natural resources and advising the Government on sustainable utilisation of marine ecosystems. The institute plays a critical role in safeguarding marine biodiversity, ensuring eco-friendly fishing practices, and developing the mariculture sector.
Its responsibilities include monitoring endangered species, managing data on key marine habitats such as mangroves, and providing technical recommendations to the Ministry of Fisheries on policy and practice. MMRI also conducts research aimed at strengthening fisheries statistics and supporting the development of an environmentally responsible fisheries industry.
