The Maldives National University (MNU) is working towards an academic partnership with the University of Waikato in New Zealand, following high-level discussions aimed at enhancing curriculum development, research collaboration, and exchange opportunities.

The meeting took place during a visit to New Zealand by MNU Vice-Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehnaaz Adam where she met with Waikato University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Quigley, and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alister Jones, to explore joint academic initiatives.

According to MNU, discussions focused on developing and researching curricula tailored to the country’s needs, joint supervision for doctoral programmes, and creating exchange opportunities for students and staff. Talks also touched on providing government-supported educational loans to make higher education more accessible for Maldivians.

Dr Shehnaaz, an alumna of Waikato University, has said that the dialogue lays the groundwork for formalising a partnership that would open doors for students and academics alike. MNU confirmed that a formal agreement is expected soon.

By fostering international academic ties, MNU aims to broaden opportunities for students and staff, improve curriculum quality, and promote research excellence—laying the groundwork for a more globally connected and academically competitive future.
