The Ministry of Health has engaged with the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s proposed tobacco control policy in the Maldives.
The Government is seeking input from stakeholders to implement a generational ban aimed at creating a tobacco-free future.
President Dr Muizzu revealed his plan during the Rayyithunnaa Ekee podcast, hosted by the President's Office. He explained that while three age groups were considered, the focus would be on one specific group. The President also opened the decision to public input through a poll on X on April 3.
The proposed ban would target individuals born from 2000, 2004, or 2007 onwards. President Dr Muizzu explained that the 18 to 25 age range was selected because they are relatively new to tobacco use, making it easier to prevent long-term addiction.
In addition to targeting younger groups, the President urged tobacco users of all ages to quit and called on tobacco importers and sellers to cease operations in the Maldives.
As consultations continue, the Ministry of Health confirmed that both WHO and UNICEF have provided guidance to ensure the successful implementation of the generational ban.
