The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has signed an agreement with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) to redevelop the Addu City Link Road.
This follows earlier remarks by Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, who highlighted the urgent need to upgrade the road, noting that it is over 20 years old and in deteriorating condition. He emphasised that its redevelopment and expansion are essential to improving connectivity and supporting the long-term development of Addu City.
Valued at MVR 829 million, the project has been awarded to RDC with a timeline of three years and eleven months. It involves the reconstruction of 12.3 kilometres of the existing link road and the construction of a new 5.5 kilometre stretch in the area already designated for expansion. In addition, 67.58 kilometres of compacted sub-base (CTB) roads will be constructed and paved.
The development will also address road flooding issues through the installation of a modern drainage system. Other components include road surfacing, construction of gates, and the installation of road markings and traffic signage to bring the route up to modern standards.
The agreement was signed by Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Ministry, and RDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair. The signing ceremony was attended by Member of Parliament for South Feydhoo Constituency Ibrahim Didi, North Feydhoo MP Ismail Nizaar, and North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Sinan.
The Addu Link Road connects the islands of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, and Gan, and is the second longest paved causeway in the country.
