As confirmed by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, more than 400,000 trees have been planted to date under the Government’s Five Million Tree Project—an ambitious national initiative aimed at large-scale environmental restoration.

The overall target for the programme stands at 5,219,456 trees. To date, a total of 498,968 trees have been successfully planted across various regions of the country.

A number of prominent organisations have pledged substantial contributions to support this national undertaking:

  • Housing Development Corporation (HDC) – 1,000,000 trees
  • Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) – 1,000,000 trees
  • SDM Farm – 750,000 trees
  • Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) – 600,000 trees
  • State Electric Company Limited (Stelco) – 500,000 trees
  • Other contributors – 1,369,456 trees

The Five Million Tree Project was officially inaugurated on World Environment Day, following its announcement by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Unlike previous tree-planting campaigns—which have often faced challenges related to sustainability—this initiative is designed to be both lasting and effective. It includes structured mechanisms to ensure long-term maintenance, ecological integration, and continued oversight, thereby addressing the shortcomings of earlier efforts and establishing a new benchmark for environmental restoration in the Maldives.

Moreover, the programme places significant emphasis on the cultivation and conservation of endangered tree species. According to recent national environmental assessments, 90 species of trees are currently classified as endangered within the Maldives.

In addition, neighbouring countries have expressed their intention to support the initiative by contributing trees to the project.
