A man who sustained severe burn injuries in a house fire in Alif Alif Rasdhoo has been transferred abroad for further medical care, after initially receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé.

According to hospital sources, the patient was taken off a ventilator last Friday, following a period of intensive care. While he remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for continued monitoring, he has now been flown to India to undergo specialised treatment. IGMH has not released detailed information regarding his current medical condition.

The fire, which broke out in the couple’s bedroom on the night of March 24, left both a man and a woman critically injured. The woman, who had sustained burns over 83 per cent of her body, tragically passed away on the night of March 31 while still on life support. The man suffered burns covering approximately 78 per cent of his body.

To aid in the treatment of both victims, a burn specialist was flown in from overseas shortly after the incident.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains ongoing.
