The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has announced the opportunity to showcase Maldivian-made products at the 9th China–South Asia Exposition (CSA Expo), taking place in June 2025 in Kunming, China.
This year’s participation carries special significance as it follows the recent implementation of the China–Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which officially came into effect on January 1, 2025. The FTA is already creating expanded market access for Maldivian businesses in China and strengthening bilateral trade ties between the two nations.
In addition to promoting Maldivian products, participating businesses will have the chance to explore investment prospects, build commercial networks, and engage in procurement and supply chain activities throughout the exposition.
According to Musthafa Abdul Gafoor, Senior Policy Officer at the Ministry, the CSA Expo is a premier international trade platform that draws widespread participation from both businesses and the general public across China and countries throughout the region. He highlighted the event’s vital role in fostering cross-border trade, attracting investment, and cultivating long-term commercial partnerships.
Musthafa further noted that the exposition serves as an important avenue for promoting regional economic integration, convening stakeholders from across South Asia through business forums and matchmaking sessions designed to connect exhibitors with professional buyers and strategic partners.
The 2025 edition of the CSA Expo also introduces a broader scope of participation. For the first time, Maldivians residing abroad will be eligible to showcase and promote products manufactured overseas, thereby expanding the global footprint of Maldivian enterprise.
The Ministry had underscored the advantages introduced by the China–Maldives FTA, which offered tariff reductions on a wide array of goods—including those from the fisheries, construction, and creative industries—and provided duty exemptions for essential imports and capital equipment. Furthermore, the FTA supported the Maldives' efforts toward economic diversification, with specific provisions for technical cooperation, skills training, and job creation through Chinese assistance.
The Government expects the agreement to reduce the cost of imports, improve access to high-quality consumer goods, and substantially increase the nation’s export capacity. Bilateral trade volume is projected to rise from the current USD 700 million to over USD 1 billion annually. Maldivian service providers—particularly in architecture, healthcare, and education—will also benefit from new avenues for expansion in the Chinese market.
In view of these promising developments, participation in the CSA Expo is anticipated to boost visibility and create meaningful commercial opportunities for Maldivian businesses operating under the enhanced trade framework.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all interested participants throughout the export registration and coordination process. Upon receiving applications, the Ministry will liaise directly with the Expo organisers in China to facilitate all necessary logistical and administrative arrangements.
Interested businesses and individuals are requested to complete the official application form and submit it via email to [email protected] no later than April 14, 2025. Booth allocation will be determined based on availability.
