The CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, has said that the development of a new 75-bed ward at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is expected to significantly ease existing service delivery challenges.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Haleem stated that the ongoing project, which includes the addition of 44 beds to the general ward, 15 beds in the high dependency unit (HDU), 14 private rooms, and two beds in the burn unit, is expected to be completed within the current month.

According to Haleem, the new ward will help improve the hospital’s overall capacity to admit patients, reduce delays in scheduled surgeries, and ensure that treatment is delivered more efficiently. He also added that the improvements would contribute to a more satisfactory working environment for staff, while enhancing the experience of patients and their families.

IGMH, currently operating with 350 beds, is the most heavily utilised hospital in the Maldives. One of its long-standing challenges has been meeting the growing demand for services amid a shortage of space and patient beds.

The expansion project was outlined in the Presidential Address 2025 as part of plans to increase IGMH’s capacity through the addition of a new 75-bed ward.
