The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and the member of Dhiggaru constituency, Ahmed Nazim has called the parliament to take the initiative to solve the issue of double pension.

Nazim called for this at the Finance Committee meeting held on April 8, where members reviewed a paper prepared and submitted by the Pension Office highlighting current issues on pension.

Under the double pension scheme, employees receive a pension upon retirement along with an additional retirement package provided by their respective agencies. This results in a substantial payout, significantly increasing the government’s spending on pensions.

Nazim stated that the parliament should take the initiative to solve the issue of double pension, rather than waiting for an amendment by the state. He also highlighted that the current pension system is no longer sustainable, and we must initiate a reform to sustain it in the long run.

Nazim further stated since the pension scheme began in 2011 until February this year, 17 agencies have spent MVR 2.96 billion as pension payments. He warned that if we fail to solve this problem, there might come a day when we fail to provide pension money.

Regarding the issue of the double pension scheme, the World Bank has also advised abolishing it to provide pension payments equally.
