Maldives Immigration has arrested eight undocumented foreign nationals as part of an ongoing nationwide operation targeting illegal immigration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Immigration said that a special task force searched four accommodation blocks in Hulhumalé, resulting in the detention of the individuals. The operation is part of a broader effort led by the Government to address the growing issue of undocumented foreigners residing and working in the country without valid work permits.
Authorities have intensified such enforcement actions, carrying out regular and unannounced raids across the country. In addition to arrests, foreigners found in violation of immigration laws are being deported.
Immigration also noted that some businesses operated by undocumented workers fail to meet food safety and hygiene standards, posing additional public health and regulatory concerns.
To support these operations, the Government has launched the Immigration Watch platform, enabling the public to report suspected violations. At the same time, an ongoing initiative is being carried out to collect biometric data from foreign workers in the Maldives to strengthen oversight and improve enforcement of immigration policies.
