The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued multiple weather alerts as the southwest monsoon intensifies, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to several regions of the country.

A yellow alert has been issued for the area stretching from Kaafu Atoll to Laamu Atoll, with the advisory remaining in effect from 10:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Additionally, two white alerts have also been declared including the southernmost region, covering Fuvahmulah City to Addu City, and was in force between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The second white alert spans Kaafu Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and is active from 9:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The alerts forecast heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind gusts of up to 40 mph, with rough sea conditions likely to persist throughout the day

The heaviest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Laamu Kaddhoo, where 159.5 millimetres of rain fell, making it the hardest-hit area in the country during the latest spell of bad weather.

According to the MET office, the ongoing disturbances are linked to a trough of low pressure currently lingering over the Maldives. While isolated areas may experience short periods of dryness, overall weather conditions are expected to remain unstable until April 11, 2025, when an easing of the system is anticipated.

Wind speeds across the country are forecast between 10 to 20 kilometres per hour, with occasional stronger gusts. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough, with wave heights ranging from three to six feet.

The Met Office has advised the public, particularly seafarers and those living in coastal regions, to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as the adverse weather continues.
