Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a significant infrastructure project aimed at expanding a key section of Malé's northern outer road near the Izzuddeen Jetty.
The project, valued at MVR 144.5 million, will see the development of a four-lane roadway as part of ongoing efforts to improve the capital’s road network.
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure formally handed over the project to MTCC. The agreement was signed by Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Ministry, while MTCC’s Managing Director, DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudhee, signed on behalf of the company.
The project will cover approximately 830 metres, beginning at the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal and extending to the local market. Work will involve fencing the designated route, constructing keywalls and pavements, installing a drainage system, and adding road markings and signage.
Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib explained that the initiative targets improved access towards the Malé North Harbour. The first phase will focus on development up to the local market. He also acknowledged that the section of Bodu Thakurufaanu Road involved is a high-traffic area and assured that the construction will be coordinated with the contractor, Malé City Council, police, and other relevant stakeholders to minimise disruption to daily traffic and public movement.
On behalf of the contractor, MTCC’s Managing Director Ahmed Saudhee said the company aims to complete the project ahead of schedule, ensuring timely delivery without compromising quality.
The initiative aligns with urban development efforts announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He previously stated that the road expansion, which will include the addition of two lanes, will be developed to a state-of-the-art standard. The project is funded under the state budget and will include development extending into the adjacent coastal area.
In addition, a separate road modernisation effort—supported by a grant from the Chinese government—is underway. It aims to upgrade all roads in Malé and Villimalé. The feasibility study for this project has already been completed earlier this year. The Government has since begun fencing parts of the city in preparation for roadworks, including the area from the Industrial Village to the MTCC Henveiru Ferry Terminal. Initial plans for this broader development were introduced while President Dr Muizzu served as Housing Minister.
