Managing Director of STELCO, Hussain Fahmy has announced that before the end of next year, all STELCO customers will be provided with smart metres.

In a special PSM interview to commemorate the current Government completing its first year, Fahmy highlighted that the installation of smart metres in Hulhumale phase 2 is nearing completion.

“The installation of smart metres in households is being given special priority. Smart metres will be available to all STELCO customers before the end of next year,” he stated.

In addition to the smart metre project, STELCO is also taking steps to address customer concerns regarding high electricity bills and improve cost efficiency.

Regarding issues with the city street lighting, STELCO is also making efforts to change the system in place. Fahmy explained that the current automatic system leads to a waste of 40 minutes, which is an additional cost. This new initiative aims to address this problem by introducing a manual system.

“As part of the smart metre system, we thought of making it so that we can turn the lights on and off manually. Because they are currently on a timer, they light up half an hour earlier. Looking at the energy it takes up per year, it is a huge expense," Fahmy said.
