The Government has deported over 6,700 foreigners for violating the laws and regulations.
Abdul Majeed Ibrahim, State Minister of the Ministry of Homeland Security, revealed this during a program on PSM News.
He stated that as part of the Government’s operation to identify undocumented foreigners, 6,750 foreigners have been deported so far. Most of the people were deported for engaging in jobs other than the work they were coming to do.
The issue of foreigners violating the law, such as by working illegally or overstaying their visas, has persisted for years.
The Government has been trying to identify such individuals and hold them accountable by conducting operations in Male’ City and expanding these operations to other inhabited islands, resorts, and industrial hubs. Authorities have also initiated targeted raids on eateries that pose a public safety risk.
In addition, authorities are also working towards creating a unified database for all expatriates to improve information management and solve issues faced by migrant workers.
