10 new hospital contracts awarded, 6 existing facilities upgrading to tertiary level

The Government has awarded contracts to build hospitals on ten islands and to upgrade existing hospitals in the most populated islands to tertiary-level facilities. 

This was revealed today by the Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim, during a press conference held at the president’s office. 

He stated that the Government is working to enhance healthcare services by establishing new hospitals on ten islands and upgrading existing facilities in highly populated islands to tertiary level. 

He highlighted that the Government is now working on upgrading the hospitals in Vilimalé, Hulhumalé, and four other islands to tertiary-level facilities. In addition, upgrade works are set to begin this year in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, Laamu Gan, Raa Ungoofaaru, and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.

He also stated that contracts have been awarded to expand health facilities in four islands, build new hospitals in ten islands, and improve the facilities of health centres in eight islands. 

According to these updates, a total of 26 health infrastructure development projects have been awarded, with some already underway. 

The minister also highlighted that work is underway on a cancer hospital and a hospital specialised for women and children. 

He also shared updates on the National Health Laboratory, stating that they have started the development process, and a spacious, well-equipped thalassemia centre is underway.
