The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced that ID card printing services will be expanded to four additional islands this month. The new locations include Muli in Meemu Atoll, Funadhoo and Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, and Velidhoo in Noonu Atoll.
This initiative is part of the Government's effort to decentralise essential services and ensure more convenient access to identity documentation for residents across the country. At present, ID card printing services are available in 15 islands.
The expansion follows growing public concerns regarding the reliance on the capital, Malé, for critical services such as ID card printing. Many citizens have expressed frustration over the delays and logistical challenges involved in obtaining ID cards from the capital. These concerns were acknowledged by President Dr Mohammed Muizzu, who pledged to improve accessibility and streamline service delivery across the nation.
Prior to the official launch of decentralised ID card and passport services in November last year, ID cards were printed centrally and dispatched to other islands. This process was often time-consuming and inconvenient, particularly for residents living in remote islands.
In response, the Government has gradually rolled out ID card printing services across various islands since November, aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce waiting times. The Department of National Registration (DNR), which oversees the provision of these services, is actively working to establish ID card printing facilities in all inhabited islands of the Maldives by the end of this year.
Additionally, DNR is also preparing to extend these services internationally. Plans are underway to introduce ID card printing facilities in countries with large Maldivian communities, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and the United Kingdom.
