The Cabinet is scheduled to discuss President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s proposal to introduce a generational tobacco ban during its meeting on Sunday.

The announcement was made by the President himself, in a statement where he underscored the urgency of addressing tobacco use in the Maldives. He highlighted that tobacco is the leading cause of chronic illnesses and disability in the Maldives and noted that 84 per cent of all deaths in the country are linked to chronic diseases caused by tobacco use.

Referring to findings from a national survey on chronic illness, the President noted that 21.8 per cent of Maldivians aged 15 to 29 use tobacco products. He also cited the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, which found that 45 per cent of school students currently use tobacco or nicotine products.

The President stated that 30.1 per cent of the Maldivian population were born after January 1, 2007, and emphasised the importance of protecting this generation from the harmful impacts of tobacco use.

He added that the proposal has been discussed with the public and international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO).

To gauge public opinion, a poll was conducted on the platform X between 3 and 8 April 2025, where participants were asked to vote on three proposed age thresholds for the generational tobacco ban. The majority, 51.1 per cent, supported banning tobacco use for those born on or after January 1, 2000.

The President stated that Sunday’s Cabinet discussion would consider the findings of the survey and expert recommendations, with the aim of reaching a decision that prioritises the health and future of the nation.
