Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced significant progress in its sea-to-air cargo operations, with the project reaching 300 per cent progress since its launch in May last year.
Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, Ahmed Zareer, General Manager of Warehouse Management at MACL, said the sea-to-air cargo system allows goods to be transported to the Maldives by sea and then forwarded by air to other destinations. This innovative approach has attracted airlines that do not operate in other Asian markets, creating growing demand at VIA.
Zareer highlighted that the airport expansion project has significantly enhanced the airport’s operational capacity. Completed components of the project include a new runway, a fuel farm, a cargo terminal, and a new seaplane terminal. He noted that these upgrades have improved efficiency and accelerated passenger services.
Commenting on the cargo village, Zareer said the facility previously handled 50 to 60 tonnes of cargo daily, but can now manage over 260 tonnes during peak season, marking a major boost in throughput capacity.
As Velana International Airport marks its 59th anniversary, it stands at the centre of major developments, with more to come including the opening of a new passenger terminal in October 2025.
