The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has clarified that no previously issued driving licences will be revoked following recent amendments to road vehicle licensing regulations, and that individuals over the age of 60 can continue using their current licences without restriction.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry addressed false claims circulating on social media suggesting that people over the age of 60 would be banned from driving certain types of vehicles. The Ministry firmly denied these claims and confirmed that all existing licences remain valid, regardless of the age of the licence holder.
The recent amendment introduces a special licence for Maldivian citizens over the age of 60, allowing them to drive a specific category of vehicles without the need to complete standard driving tests. The Ministry explained that this special permit is intended to ease the licensing process for senior citizens, particularly those living in island communities across the atolls.
The Ministry urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, warning that such posts and articles misrepresent the intent behind what it described as a positive and enabling reform designed to benefit senior citizens across the country.
