The number of cases reported to the Maldives Police Service during this year’s Ramadan has decreased by 17.2 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to newly released police statistics.
Data published by police on social media revealed that 1,293 cases were reported during Ramadan 2025, down from 1,563 cases in 2024.
The number of arrests also dropped significantly. While 308 individuals were arrested during Ramadan last year, only 196 arrests were made this year – a decrease of 36.6 per cent.
Despite the overall decline in reported cases and arrests, police expressed concern over the rising number of scams and cybercrime incidents. This year, 103 scam cases were reported, up from 72 last year – an increase of 31 cases.
Traffic accidents topped the list of reported incidents during Ramadan, with 388 cases filed. Theft was the second most reported crime, with 342 cases recorded. Police confirmed that 60 individuals were arrested in connection with theft.
Drug-related crimes also remained prevalent. A total of 114 drug cases were reported during the holy month, leading to the arrest of 94 individuals.
Other reported cases included 29 incidents of domestic violence, 24 cases of child abuse, 64 cases of property damage, 62 intimidation cases, and 23 robberies.
In response to these findings, police said they plan to ramp up public safety initiatives and awareness programmes to address emerging crime trends.
