First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has filed cases in both the Civil Court and Family Court following remarks made by opposition activist Mariyam Zubair, which allegedly targeted and defamed her 16-year-old son.

According to a press release issued by Rehendhi Chambers, during protests organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Malé in March, activist Mariyam Zubair (also known as Mandhy) “launched scathing attacks” against the President’s son. Her accusations and inflammatory statements “have sparked significant concerns regarding risks to his safety, education, and future.” The situation reportedly escalated with threats and abusive language directed at the minor, raising alarm over the infringement of his rights.

In response, the First Lady, acting as both a mother and legal guardian, has initiated two separate legal actions to safeguard her child’s constitutional and legal protections. These include two Civil Court cases filed in March, citing the constitutional right to protection of one’s name and against defamation; one case against Mandhy and another against the MDP and its Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail.

Additionally, two cases have been filed in the Family Court under the Child Rights Protection Act (Act No. 2019/19), in accordance with constitutional safeguards and the international Convention on the Rights of the Child. One case has been filed against Mandhy, while the other again names the MDP and Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.

“These cases have been filed with the objective of affirming that the right to dignity and protection guaranteed to children under the Constitution and laws cannot be undermined, even in the context of political rivalry or competition,” the statement reads. “They aim to shield children from any attempt to exploit, abuse, or endanger their wellbeing, education, and future.”

The press release adds that the First Lady believes that, as a mother, it is essential to ensure the safety and protection of the children of those serving in public roles today, as well as those who will hold such positions in the future.
