Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya visited Alifu Dhaalu Ariyadhoo to inspect the island for the establishment of the Coconut Development Centre.
On March 12, 2025, the Government announced plans to establish this Centre in Ariyadhoo with the aim of cultivating high-quality coconut palms and ensuring a sustainable supply of coconut varieties throughout the nation.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, during her visit, the Minister's team assessed the island to commence works according to the plan. Prior to visiting Ariyadhoo, Minister Dr Mariya met with the Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili Island Council to discuss how they could assist in the development project.
The Minister's tour also included Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah, where she met with the local Island Council and inspected agricultural sites.
The Cabinet had earlier decided to hand over Ariyadhoo to the Ministry of Agriculture on March 9. Beyond the Coconut Development Centre, the Government's plans for the island include projects to enhance food security and promote coastal vegetation cultivation to strengthen environmental sustainability.
The initiative will also incorporate adaptive research to identify common coconut palm diseases and develop effective biological control strategies.
