The University of Nottingham Malaysia's Maldivian Society is set to host the Inter-University Rajje Futsal Tournament this Saturday, 19 April 2025, at X Park Sunway South Quay — marking a major milestone for Maldivian students across Malaysia.

This is the first inter-university futsal tournament exclusively for Maldivian students in the country.

With participation from over 12 universities — including Sunway University, Monash University Malaysia, Asia Pacific University (APU), Taylor’s University, and the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) — the tournament aims to unite Maldivian students from across the nation in a spirited day of sport, unity, and cultural celebration.

Scheduled to run from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the event offers a full day of dynamic matches, vibrant atmosphere, and enthusiastic support from the sidelines.

The event is an initiative led by President Mohamed Zimaam and Vice President Ishada Ibrahim of the UNMC Maldivian Society.

According to Zimaam, the inspiration behind the tournament came from a desire to create something meaningful for Maldivian students living far from home. He shared that football and futsal are the most popular and hyped-up sports in the Maldives, and he believed a futsal tournament would be the perfect way to bring everyone together through a shared passion.

“As a Maldivian student studying in Malaysia, I wanted to create an event that would give us all a chance to reconnect with home and feel that sense of community again,” Zimaam said.

"It’s not just about playing a game", he emphasised, "but about building a space where people can come together, have fun, and feel that ‘home’ feeling, no matter how far we are from the Maldives."

Organised carnival-style, the tournament will feature more than futsal matches. Attendees can expect food stalls, games, and interactive activities, offering a lively and inclusive atmosphere for players, supporters, and spectators alike.

Zimaam expressed his hope that the tournament would gain widespread visibility — not only within the Maldivian student network, but also among other university communities. He stated that everyone is welcome to join, support, and be part of the celebration.
