A book of condolences was opened today at the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy (DBA) to commemorate the passing of Madulu Mohamed Waheed, esteemed Advisor to the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.

Members of the public are invited to pay their respects by signing the condolence register, which will be available from 10:15 a.m. on Thursday. The register will remain open until Wednesday, the 30th of this month, during official working days from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Mohamed Waheed (Madulu) passed away on a Sunday last month, marking the loss of one of the Maldives’ most prominent figures in the preservation and promotion of Dhivehi language and culture.

Over the course of more than 46 years, Mohamed Waheed dedicated his life to writing and scholarship. He contributed extensively to Dhivehi language, literature, history, and cultural studies, earning him national recognition and the heartfelt respect of the community. He was widely regarded as a literary expert and a generous mentor—often described as a guiding murshid to those around him.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mohamed Waheed authored numerous stories, articles, and advisory texts, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary and cultural contributions. His enduring commitment to the advancement of Dhivehi literature earned him the National Award of Honour in 2019. He was also a two-time recipient of the National Award for Public Service.

That was in recognition of his work in short story writing in 1997 and for his role in developing the Dhivehi language in 1985. Additionally, his excellence in journalism was acknowledged with the prestigious Alimas Galan of Honour in 2018, celebrating his valuable contributions to the field.
