A powerbank explosion triggered a fire this afternoon at a residential home in Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, leaving one room completely destroyed and its contents charred beyond use.

The incident occurred at the residence of Ahmed Shafiu, President of the Atoll Council, who was in Male’ at the time. Although no injuries were reported, significant damage was caused to the room and its furnishings.

Speaking to MMTV, a member of the Kudahuvadhoo Council informed that the explosion took place during a power outage on the island. The fire damaged the ceiling, furniture, and other personal belongings in the affected room. Emergency response teams from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and local police managed to bring the fire under control by approximately 1:15 p.m.

Council President Shafiu stated that the exact circumstances leading to the explosion are still under investigation. It has not yet been confirmed whether the powerbank exploded while it was connected to a power source.

Incidents involving powerbank explosions have been reported globally, prompting safety concerns. Several airlines have since restricted the use of powerbanks on board, only permitting them in hand luggage due to the potential fire risk.
