Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim honoured the nation's doctors on National Doctors Day, sharing a message that recognised their crucial role in developing the country's healthcare system.

The message, posted on the Ministry of Health's official X account, thanked doctors for their contributions both past and present.

According to the message, the Minister recognises the vital role Maldivian doctors have played in shaping the health system. It noted their impact from establishing the foundations of community care to advanced medical services, describing these contributions as being at the heart of the nation's progress.

The Minister expressed gratitude for the doctors' unwavering dedication, service, and the countless lives they continue to touch daily.

This recognition comes as the Government implements initiatives to improve healthcare throughout the island nation. These efforts include upgrading medical facilities, expanding specialised care within the Maldives to reduce travel abroad for treatment, and using technologies like telemedicine to connect remote islands.

A key priority is strengthening the country's medical workforce. Plans focus on increasing training opportunities for Maldivian medical students, offering paths to specialisation, and creating programmes to keep doctors working in the country, especially in remote atolls that often rely on foreign medical staff.

Strengthening primary healthcare and addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) also remain central pillars of the national health plan.

National Doctors Day is observed annually in the Maldives on April 18.
