Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has expressed concern regarding recent remarks made by former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, commenting on the tone and manner of political discourse.
In a recent post on X, Minister Saeed reflected on a political debate held in 2007, ahead of the country’s first systematic vote. He recalled that during the event, Jameel—who later served as Vice President from 2013 to 2015 under president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom—made comments that were, in Saeed’s view, unnecessarily harsh. He also suggested that Jameel's departure from the debate stage at the time may have lacked composure.
Looking at the present day, Minister Saeed expressed concern that similar rhetorical approaches continue to surface. He noted that public discourse, particularly in political spaces, should uphold the dignity of individuals and families, and be mindful of the sensitivities around religious references. The Minister remarked that concepts such as repentance and divine judgement are deeply personal matters of faith and should be treated with due reverence and respect.
In offering a contrast, the Minister spoke positively of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, commending his leadership style as measured, courteous, and grounded in principle. He noted that the President remains committed to fulfilling the promises made to the Maldivian people and observed that public confidence in the Administration appears to be steadily increasing.
Minister Saeed expressed concern over individuals who, under the guise of political activism, engage in personal attacks and insults, actions which he believes negatively affect the country’s image and undermine core family values. He emphasised that such behaviour is inconsistent with the values upheld by educated youth and the majority of civilised Muslim citizens.
