President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged educated individuals from all fields to take the lead in tackling and eliminating harmful societal issues in the Maldives.

Speaking at the 2025 convocation ceremony of the Islamic University of Maldives on Saturday night, the President emphasised that building a society rooted in strong moral values requires collective effort, and that such unity can pave the way for meaningful national reform.

Challenging the nation to consider how progress can be made without the will to move forward in the right direction, President Dr Muizzu underscored that the Holy Quran provides a clear path. He stressed that instilling Islamic moral values in a 100 per cent Islamic nation is a responsibility that rests with educated citizens, calling it an unquestionable duty.

“If there are no ideas or solutions to address the nation’s challenges, we cannot expect reform,” the President said.

He encouraged parents to guide their children along the right path, while also highlighting the vital role of educational institutions in nurturing a values-based society. Reiterating the importance of a principled mindset, he warned that without it, society will struggle to stand against harmful influences and behaviours.

President Dr Muizzu also pledged his Administration’s commitment to strengthening the Islamic University of Maldives. He assured that the university would receive much-needed improvements in both infrastructure and resources.

The evening also marked a historic moment for higher education in the Maldives, as an honorary doctorate was conferred for the first time by a local institution. The Islamic University of Maldives awarded the honorary doctorate to Sheikh Ismail Mohamed, in recognition of over five decades of dedicated service in advancing Arabic and Islamic education. The honour was personally presented by the President.

In addition to the honorary degree, President Dr Muizzu presented commemorative certificates and awards to a number of graduates, including top-ranking students.

This year, more than 900 students graduated from the Islamic University of Maldives.
