The Government has announced development of new cold storage facilities aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Maldivian fishermen.

As such, the Government plans to develop a brine freezing facility with a storage capacity of 1,000 tonnes of fish in HA. Ihavandhoo. This project will be funded by the Islamic Development Bank.

The Government has also signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s ROS For Trading and Contracting Company to develop a cold storage facility in M. Mulak. The facility will have a capacity of 500 tonnes and the capability to brine freeze 50 tonnes of fish daily.

The agreement, signed in October, grants the company 300 days to complete the construction of the facility, with the project estimated to cost USD 5.188 million.

Additionally, with the support of Islamic Development Bank, a cold storage with the capacity to store 500 tonnes of fish will be constructed in S. Hulhumeedhoo.
