President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his Administration’s resolve to enhance the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), framing military development as a core element of national integrity and independence.
Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the 133rd anniversary of the MNDF at Kalhuthuh’kalaa Koshi, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the importance of building a robust and well-equipped defence force capable of responding to modern security challenges. He stressed that boosting operational readiness, modernising resources, and upskilling personnel must be collective priorities, not just governmental obligations.
He also acknowledged growing criticism of military investment, suggesting such views overlook the necessity of a strong defence for a small island nation with vast maritime boundaries. The President urged citizens to recognise the role of national defence in protecting long-term peace and stability, and to support policies that reinforce national resilience.
Recalling the state of the military upon taking office in November 2023, the President said improving defence infrastructure became a critical objective. He noted that while the Maldives’ population is small, its strategic geography, with 99 per cent of its territory consisting of ocean, demands heightened defence focus—especially in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Outlining the next steps, the President shared plans to strengthen all branches of the armed forces, including the Air Force, Navy, and Army. He announced that applications for the National Service programme would soon be open, aimed at cultivating a new generation of trained personnel to support national defence.
As part of the event, the President introduced a new service ribbon dedicated to recognising health and fitness excellence within the MNDF. He also celebrated the accomplishments of top-performing units and individuals, including those honoured at the Pakistan Army Team Spirit (PATS) competition.
In a symbolic gesture of commitment to the future of the armed forces, President Dr Muizzu personally handed rifles to new recruits completing their basic training, formally welcoming them into service.
