The Maldives Police Service (MPS)  has reported a sharp rise in traffic accidents across the Greater Malé Region in the first quarter of 2025, with 1,068 incidents recorded

The highest monthly figure was reported in February, with 398 accidents, followed by 352 in March and 318 in January. Malé City itself accounted for the largest share, registering 561 accidents over the three-month period. Hulhumalé recorded 454 incidents, while Hulhule’ and Vilimalé saw a total of 49 and 4 accidents respectively, underscoring growing safety concerns in the capital's increasingly congested road network.

According to police statistics, a significant number of the crashes occurred on the bridges connecting Hulhumalé Phases 1 and 2, now critical arteries in the capital’s transport system. A particularly serious accident on 1 February resulted in one fatality on the Sinamalé Bridge, where a motorcyclist collided with a traffic cone.

The increase represents a marked year-on-year rise. In February 2024, 267 road accidents were reported nationwide — a figure now eclipsed by February 2025’s tally from Greater Malé alone.

While the Maldives continues to urbanise rapidly, the figures highlight a growing strain on infrastructure and road discipline. In response, police have issued fresh calls for motorists to adhere to traffic rules, remain vigilant, and avoid reckless driving.
