A man has been sentenced to 54 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a minor while in a position of trust.

The verdict was delivered on Monday, April 21, 2025, following a detailed investigation and prosecution under the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders.

The man was arrested on September 3, 2022 in Hulhumalé Phase II. The Maldives Police Service completed their investigation and forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office on October 18, 2022.

According to Article 9(b), of the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders the offence of sexually assaulting a child in a position of trust carries a sentence of 15 to 18 years. An additional 15 to 18 years is prescribed under Article 10(b) when the perpetrator is in a position of responsibility. Furthermore, Article 4(b) stipulates 10 to 14 years’ imprisonment for engaging in a sexual act with a child.

Taking into account the cumulative nature of these offences, the court imposed a total sentence of 54 years. However, the offender has already served three years in detention during the investigation and trial process. This time will be deducted, leaving 51 years to be served.
