Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan
The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has denied the allegations that the former Controller General of Immigration, Shamaan Waheed, was falsely framed and wrongfully detained.
The Minister addressed the matter while responding to questions raised by members of the Parliament in today’s sitting. The opposition has continuously raised allegations that Shamaan was being falsely framed.
On 22 March, Shamaan and two other officers were arrested in connection with an immigration case concerning the release of a foreign national who had been detained during a raid.
Responding to the allegations, Minister Ihusaan affirmed that the law will be enforced without discrimination against anyone who breaks it.
The Minister stated that the Maldives Police Service would exercise all powers vested in them by law to ensure thorough investigations and to prevent anyone from being wrongly framed.
According to the police reports, the arrested officers who were responsible for tracking and detaining undocumented migrants had allegedly abused their authority during a raid on a residence housing migrant workers.
During the operation, several migrant workers and a significant amount of cash were seized. The following day, a foreign national detained with MVR 530,000 in his possession was released in the early hours under Shamaan's orders.
During the investigation, police raided Shamaan’s residence, seizing a large amount of money, amounting to MVR 257,475 and USD 10,000, as well as other foreign currencies, along with an electronic device suspected to have been obtained from foreigners.
