Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that the recent ban on Israeli passport holders entering the Maldives has not impacted the number of tourist arrivals.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Thoriq said the Ministry is monitoring daily tourist arrival figures and has observed no decline or significant impact following the implementation of the ban.
The Minister noted that the move has drawn international media attention, with many expressing support for the Maldives’ decision. While some media outlets have speculated that the decision could harm the Maldives' tourism industry, Minister Thoriq said there has been no indication of any organised boycott or campaign targeting the destination. He also highlighted that the Government has received positive responses and praise from several quarters.
Minister Thoriq added that the Ministry is maintaining communication with diplomatic missions in the Maldives and abroad to provide clarity on the rationale behind the policy decision.
The ban on Israeli passport holders was ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on April 15, 2025, as part of the Third Amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act. The decision followed growing public concern in the Maldives over the ongoing genocide in Gaza and widespread calls for action in solidarity with Palestinians.
According to the latest tourism statistics, as of April 22, 2025, a total of 783,226 tourists have arrived in the Maldives this year, reflecting a 7.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
