The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced plans to establish a tree nursery in Hulhumalé Phase 2 as part of the Five Million Tree Project, a national reforestation initiative launched in 2024.
According to the Ministry, the nursery will be developed on a plot covering over 55,000 square feet and will include facilities such as a laboratory and a meeting room. The site is intended to be accessible to the public and will also be used to conduct environmental awareness programmes, including sessions for school children.
A team working on the Five Million Tree Project from the Ministry recently visited China to consult with the National Forestry and Grasslands Administration. Discussions focused on nursery design, species selection, and strategies to improve the efficiency of tree cultivation and planting for the project.
The Ministry has stated that the nursery is expected to begin practical work within the year and is intended to support ongoing tree planting efforts across the country.
The Five Million Tree Project was launched on June 5, 2024, to coincide with World Environment Day. The project aims to plant a total of 5,219,456 trees across the Maldives, with a particular focus on the conservation of endangered tree species. According to national environmental assessments, there are currently 90 tree species classified as endangered in the country.
