According to the latest statistics released by the National Mental Health Department, a total of 199 individuals are currently receiving care at the Special Needs Centre in Kaafu Guraidhoo.
The centre is dedicated to providing safe and comprehensive care for persons with mental illnesses, physical disabilities, and the elderly.
The report indicates that 123 of the residents are male, while 76 are female. Of the total, 32 individuals are over the age of 65. Furthermore, 167 residents are currently undergoing treatment for mental health conditions.
Extensive efforts are ongoing to reintegrate residents into their families where possible. In 2023, 20 individuals were successfully reunited with their families. As of 22 April this year, a further 13 residents have been returned to their families. Over the past six years, a total of 33 individuals have been reintegrated into family environments.
Previously overseen by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the centre was transferred to the Ministry of Health in August, following a decision by the President’s Cabinet. In conjunction with this transition, the budget and staffing responsibilities were also transferred to the Ministry of Health, with the aim of streamlining administration and enhancing service provision.
