The National Meteorological Service (MET) has forecasted that the current spell of heavy rainfall affecting parts of the Maldives is expected to ease after Wednesday.
According to the MET, Saturday saw particularly bad weather, with heavy rainfall recorded in several areas. The highest rainfall over the past 24 hours was recorded in Vaavu Rakeedhoo, which received 88.6 millimetres of rain.
Speaking to MMTV, the MET explained that the rain is being caused by moist air moving in from both the north and south of the country, leading to cloud formation. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by the middle of the week.
For today, the forecast indicates mostly cloudy skies with thunderstorms, and the possibility of heavy rain in some areas.
The MET also reported that seas will be moderately calm in the northern atolls, but moderately rough in the central and southern atolls. Authorities have advised vessels and the general public to remain cautious, particularly in areas expecting strong winds and heavy rain.
