The National Drug Agency (NDA) has launched a special operation aimed at addressing the rise in the use of party drugs and other narcotic substances across the Maldives.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the National Drug Agency (NDA) said it has received growing public concern regarding the spread of photos and videos showing intoxicated individuals engaging in criminal activities, as well as instances where members of the public have harmed those under the influence. The agency noted that these incidents have been reported in Malé and other islands. In response, the NDA, in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service, has launched a special operation to address the situation.
The NDA stressed that drug use is not only a criminal offense but also poses serious health risks. The agency warned that substances commonly referred to as party drugs, along with alcohol and other narcotics, are often falsely perceived as safe but are in fact life-threatening. The agency strongly advised against the use of these substances, particularly those being promoted in the context of partying.
Findings from the NDA’s Out Reach programme, conducted in the Greater Malé area between February 25 and March 25, 2025, identified worrying levels of drug abuse, particularly among minors. The programme highlighted an increase in drug use associated with partying and smoking behaviours.
The NDA called for the community’s full cooperation in addressing the issue and urged the public to report sightings of individuals suspected to be under the influence. Reports can be made by contacting the agency's emergency number 911 or its hotline 1410.
