The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Soneva Fushi resort MVR 448,375 after finding the resort in violation of environmental regulations concerning the protected Baa Nelivaru Lagoon.

The case came to light after the EPA received a report on December 18, stating that Soneva Fushi employees and tourists had entered the lagoon without permission. The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office and Police filed the complaint, prompting an investigation by the EPA.

Following its inquiry, the EPA concluded that resort employees had breached the Natural Protected Areas Regulations. The agency noted that unauthorised activities included entering the lagoon without a permit, lighting the area at night, making noise that could disturb wildlife, and lighting fires.

The Nelivaru Lagoon was designated as a protected area on November 9, 2023. Under the protection status, any use of the area requires special authorisation.

In response to the investigation, Soneva Fushi submitted a letter to the EPA admitting to the unauthorised activities. The EPA has given the resort 30 days from April 23 to pay the imposed fine.
