Maldives and Malaysia sign new cooperation agreements

The Maldives and Malaysia have signed agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation across several important sectors. The agreements were signed during the official visit of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to Malaysia.

Prior to the signing ceremony, President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim issued a joint statement emphasising the importance of deepening collaboration between the two nations. Both leaders expressed their commitment to working together on regional and international matters and discussed exploring further avenues for strengthening bilateral relations.

In the statement, the leaders also affirmed their shared views on Palestine and pledged to cooperate closely on this front. President Dr Muizzu extended an invitation to Prime Minister Ibrahim to visit the Maldives.

Following their remarks, the two leaders formally exchanged the signed agreements.

Areas of Cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia

  1. Cooperation in the Field of Sports. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldives by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdullah Khaleel, and by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, on behalf of the Malaysian Government.
  2. Cooperation in the Health Sector. This agreement was also signed by Dr Abdullah Khaleel for the Government of the Maldives, while Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad signed on behalf of the Government of Malaysia.
  3. Cooperation in the Field of Tourism. Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed, the Maldives' Ambassador to Malaysia, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian Government. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Khairul Firdaus, represented Malaysia.
  4. Diplomatic Training. The agreement focused on developing people in the diplomatic sector was signed by Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed for the Maldives and by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Alamin, for Malaysia.

The President’s visit was accompanied by Maldivian Ministers, and ministers from both countries were present at the exchange ceremony.
