President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Dr Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of Malaysia’s Sunway Group, to discuss potential avenues for collaboration between the Maldives and the conglomerate.
Discussions included the possibility of establishing partnerships with the Maldives National University (MNU), as well as broader cooperation in key sectors. Dr Jeffrey Cheah provided an overview of Sunway Group’s operations and expertise, while the delegation expressed interest in the Maldives' investment landscape.
In expressing interest in the Maldives’ investment potential, the Sunway delegation inquired about the country’s business environment, including procedures for foreign investment, taxation, visa facilitation, and currency policies. They also conveyed plans to visit the Maldives to gain a clearer understanding of the local investment climate.
Responding to these inquiries, Maldivian Ministers present at the meeting outlined ongoing national initiatives, such as the Ras Malé project and developments in Special Economic Zones. They also highlighted efforts to accelerate the country's digital transformation and shared updates on solar energy projects aligned with the Government’s goal of transitioning to 33 per cent renewable energy.
The officials further noted that the Maldives Foreign Investment Act, which came into effect in December 2024, is designed to create a more secure and investor-friendly environment, aimed at attracting sustainable foreign investment.
This meeting is part of a broader effort by the Government to strengthen economic ties and attract investment to the Maldives. The President had stated prior to his trip that the visit was intended to open new channels for economic cooperation. In pursuit of this goal, the President also met with Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, Founder and Advisor of Berjaya Corporation Berhad, during his time in Malaysia.
Sunway Group is a Malaysian multinational conglomerate with business interests across healthcare, education, construction, property development, retail, and hospitality.
