The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has installed a “Vadhu Kandhufathi”, Fish Aggregating Device (FAD), near Dhiggaru for sport fishing.
The newly installed FAD is 6 nautical miles northeast of Dhiggaru. According to the ministry, the vessel is identified as J10V01.
This marks the second FAD installed in Mulaku Atoll. The first FAD was installed last year, at 4.05 nautical miles east of Veyvah.
Under the ministry’s initiative, several new FADs are being installed in different Atolls, and existing ones are being repaired.
FADs create artificial shade that attracts marine life, encouraging these species to gather near the floating structures. By mimicking natural conditions in the open ocean, FADs significantly boost fishing efficiency in their surrounding areas.
Two types of FADs are currently used in the Maldives: "Dhoshi Kandhufathi”, designed to attract skipjack tuna, and “Vadhu Kandhufathi”, designed to tailor for the specific requirements of sport fishing. So far, 65 devices have been installed for tuna fishing, while 26 have been installed for sport fishing.
These two types of FADs are marked uniquely to ensure identification and safety. Sport fishing FADs are painted yellow and installed between three and six nautical miles from inhabited islands.
