Regional Airports Limited has announced that Meemu Muli Airport will open with scheduled commercial flights once final assessments by the Civil Aviation Authority are completed.
A test flight operated by a Dash-8 aircraft from national carrier Maldivian successfully landed at the airport on April 25 as part of standard pre-operational procedures. Following this, aviation authorities are conducting the required evaluations to issue an operational license.
Regional Airports Managing Director Ahmed Mubeen stated that while the airport was initially scheduled to open on May 1, the launch was postponed to coincide with the commencement of commercial services. He confirmed that the airport infrastructure is complete, with only minor work remaining, and that coordination with airline operators is ongoing to finalise a launch date.
A meeting with Maldivian is scheduled for Sunday to discuss flight services, and the full rollout of operations is expected to take 15 to 20 days.
Located on Muli Island, the capital of Meemu Atoll, the domestic airport features a 1,500-metre runway. The project began in 2021 with 36 hectares of reclaimed land. It was developed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) at a cost exceeding MVR 300 million.
