President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to press freedom, highlighting the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism and the ongoing importance of media independence in democratic societies.

In a message shared on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2025, President Dr Muizzu reflected on this year’s global theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.” He emphasised that the responsible use of AI holds great potential to serve the public interest, particularly in countering disinformation and restoring trust in media.

He stated that AI, when used responsibly, can be a powerful tool for public good, particularly in addressing the spread of disinformation and misinformation, which are often sources of mistrust and social division.

Reflecting on the Maldives' national context, the President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring a free, independent, and responsible press. He also took the opportunity to commend journalists around the world for their continued dedication to producing valid and trustworthy reporting, noting that their work contributes significantly to the strength of democratic institutions, the protection of human dignity, and the promotion of justice.

The President also highlighted that the Maldives is actively working with national and international partners, including the Media Freedom Coalition and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to improve media literacy, raise awareness about AI-generated content, and support the ethical use of AI in journalism.

World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 to raise awareness of the value of independent journalism and the ongoing need to safeguard press freedom worldwide. This year’s theme focuses on the impact of technological advancements, particularly AI, on the rights and responsibilities of the media.
