President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the Government’s decision to ban Israeli passport holders as a proud moment in the Maldives’ foreign policy.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office this morning, the President said the move reflects the sentiments of the Maldivian people and reaffirms the country’s identity as a fully Islamic nation. He stated that although the Maldives is a small country, it remains firm in its principles and opposition to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The ban on Israeli passport holders was ratified by President Dr Muizzu on April 15, 2025, as part of the Third Amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act. The decision came in response to growing public concern over the genocide in Gaza and widespread calls across the Maldives to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians.

Since the implementation of the ban, the Government has reported that there has been no negative impact on tourism arrivals, despite earlier speculation in the media that the decision might adversely affect the tourism sector.
