President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has revealed the total number of arrests made during protests under his administration and the previous one, proving the greater freedom of expression and the right to protest permitted under his leadership.

Responding to a question at today’s press briefing, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu disclosed the number of arrests made during protests under his administration and the previous one.

He stated that 73 protests were held in the past one and a half years, with only 12 individuals arrested. He highlighted that these numbers were higher in the previous administration, where 279 protests were held during the past five years, and 700 individuals were arrested.

Highlighting instances of police brutality, the President noted that one such incident under his administration occurred on the night of the People’s National Front’s meeting. He stated that an inquiry has been done regarding this incident, and the officers involved have now been removed from their responsibilities.

The President further stated that his Administration has increased the number of places where protests can be held without prior notice. He also emphasised that individuals are always free to hold peaceful marches in the city.

The Opposition party MDP has held several protests since President Dr Muizzu assumed office. So far, police have not interfered in any of these protests or arrested any individuals during these protests.
