Maldives to host first Commonwealth beach handball games in Kulhudhuffushi

The Handball Association of the Maldives has revealed that the first Commonwealth beach handball games will be held in September at Kulhudhuffushi City.

This was revealed during the press briefing held by the Handball Association yesterday. 

The Commonwealth beach handball games were first scheduled in 2024 in Pakistan, but were not held that year. 

Addressing the press, the president of the Handball Association, Ahmed Mujuthaba (Mujey), revealed that they began preparations for this tournament in 2024. 

Upon receiving the proposal, a survey was conducted to determine whether Kulhudhuffushi City was suitable for these games. It was done in collaboration with the Asian Handball Federation, the Maldives Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, which proved that this venue was suitable for these games. 

He further highlighted the opportunity to promote the Maldivian beaches through these beach handball games. 

The inaugural Commonwealth beach handball games will be held from 18 to 22 September, with four countries confirmed to participate and more expected to join. 

Addressing the press, the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, acknowledged the efforts of the Handball Association in bringing the games to the Maldives. He further highlighted the popularity of handball in the Maldives and stated that the sport has the potential to represent the country internationally. 

The Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, Mohamed Athif, stated that holding the games in Kulhudhuffushi City will benefit the country through sports tourism. He highlighted the importance of using such opportunities to promote the Maldives.

In addition, the President of the Olympic Committee, Mohamed Abdulsattar (Champi), emphasised the importance of proper organisation to showcase the Maldives’ potential to host Commonwealth-level competitions.
