Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has asserted that seeking knowledge from reliable and trusted sources is the most effective way to counter terrorism and extremist ideology.

He made the remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the five-day training programme, ‘Building the Capacity of Imams and Preachers,' jointly organised by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) and the Maldives National Counter Terrorism.

Spanning five days, the programme offers lectures and workshops designed to cover topics such as the propaganda techniques employed by extremist groups, essential public speaking and communication skills, and the principles of moderation and balance. Participants can also exchange successful preaching experiences.

This training is part of IMCTC's broader objective to conduct 90 training programmes and 20 awareness and knowledge-based initiatives across its member states, all designed to strengthen capabilities in the fight against terrorism.

Addressing the religious leaders at the event, Minister Dr Shaheem highlighted the historically prominent role of scholars and Imams in society, noting their importance in raising religious and social awareness among the public.

In his speech, Minister Dr Shaheem pointed out that terrorism and extremist views do not belong to any one religion but often arise from a lack of clear and accurate understanding. He referred to this as a kind of misguided thinking or confusion, stating the best way to overcome it is through reliable, well-informed education. He described the forum, which aims to provide accurate information on terrorism and extremism, as extremely important, adding that Islamic teachings advocate for treating all individuals with kindness, compassion, and justice, regardless of faith.

The Minister also distinguished between jihad and terrorism, emphasising the need to understand the difference. He explained that Sharia has laid down specific principles for jihad, noting it is the responsibility of the state and its ruler, not individuals. According to him, the purpose of jihad is to protect the nation and its citizens, and Islam strictly prohibits all forms of terrorism.

He acknowledged the significant efforts led by Saudi Arabia to protect the Islamic Ummah from terrorism and extremist ideologies, expressing gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.

The Minister added that the Government is taking initiative to work against such ideologies and that the Maldives and Saudi Arabia plan to collaborate on important efforts in this regard.
