The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is preparing to commence construction work to further develop the Maldives National University (MNU) campus in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
The project includes the construction of new accommodation facilities for students and staff.
Planned to be carried out in three phases, the project will begin with the construction of a three-storey academic building, followed by two separate two-storey accommodation blocks, one for students and the other for staff.
According to MTCC, the student accommodation block will consist of 31 rooms and a laundry facility. The staff block will include seven rooms and a café.
The development aims to expand and modernise the Thinadhoo campus, improving access to educational and housing facilities for both students and staff. MTCC noted that the upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance educational opportunities and provide wider social benefits to residents of the island and surrounding region.
The MNU Thinadhoo campus was established in 2003. It has since expanded to offer academic programmes from certificate to master's level in various disciplines. The campus currently features a nursing skills lab, computer lab, library, modern classrooms and vocational training workshops. It also operates a residence facility offering secure single-room accommodation for students from other islands.
The Maldives National University currently operates campuses in Malé, Laamu Gan, Seenu Hithadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
